Description: This map was the first major survey of the city to be completed since the time of Speed's map. It shows Bath still largely contained within its medieval walls. The map indicates the growing popularity of Bath as a destination for visitors. Around the border it contains views of 36 public buildings of which 29 are lodging houses and it also has a list of the 23 principal inns. This popular map was reissued 6 times between 1694 and 1731 with few alternations. It was available to buy in London on Fleet Street, alongside prospects of rival destinations Tunbridge Wells and Scarborough. Maps such as these would have played an important role in encouraging Londoners to visit Bath.
