Military camp at Ballard Down, Dorset, c.1900s

This military camp (probably infantry and Cyclist Corps) is on the cliffs above Swanage, near Ballard Down. The Cyclist Corps were set up in 1908 and mainly saw service defending Britain's South Coast or behind active lines in France in WW1 (bicycles were ineffective in front line action) before being disbanded in 1919. A military ambulance (red cross) is at the near edge of the camp. Scanned from the photographer's original negative. Most of these images were taken before he started producing postcards, and before he saved his images on glass plates.
