Description

Jacob Henry Cotterell's plan of 1852 was the last significant independent map of the city, before the arrival of the Ordnance Survey. Cotterell came from a family firm of engineers and surveyors that undertook most of the large scale surveys of Bath parishes required for the Tithe Apportionment Survey in the 1830s. These surveys would have provided much of the information required for this map. Cotterell was the first map maker to include spot heights on a map of Bath and this is the first map that gives a sense of Bath as a city surrounded by hills.
