Description

Tinted. John Wood the Elder's map served to publicise his skill as an architect and developer by celebrating his new buildings and illustrating future proposals. The most prominent feature of the map is John Wood's own development of Queen Square, the first major extension of the city beyond its medieval walls. The map also includes a number of buildings that were never completed as depicted including the 'hospital for 60 poor strangers' which was later built elsewhere. It is the first new survey that shows the city in block plan and it became the base for subsequent maps.
