Description

Locomotive No 53809 is a Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway - 7F engine, now owned by the 13809 7F Preservation Group at Midland Railway - Butterley. The Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway closed on 7 March 1966. Photograph by Robert Coles who proves this lovely comment on how the photo came about - "I put a lot of effort into the photo, the loco had been to Eastleigh I think for an event. I wanted to link the photo to the S&D but there were no suitable locations on the way down which was in daylight. On the way back the bridge over which the loco had hurtled in 1929 to crash in the goods yard could be used as a background. The difficulty was that it was timetabled to pass there in the middle of the night. It meant driving down to Burnham Road at about 3am and waiting, listening to the strange noises coming from the houses. I was quite alone so no one else has a picture, there were a couple of fans on Bath station and as the train passed the loco whistled so that Ivo Peters could hear it in the Royal Crescent; he was not well at that time."
