Reprinted from the Bath and Cheltenham Gazette, June 13th 1877. The timber-built halfpenny bridge collapsed under the sheer weight of people crossing to the Bath & West Centenary Show at Alexandra Park. 10 people lost their lives and 50 were injured. The people had come on an excursion train from Weymouth. A steel replacement was put in place afterwards and still stands today.
