Description

Inserted in the frontispiece of Ode on an Evening View of the Crescent at Bath by Christopher Anstey 1773. Gay is shown in gown and wig directing the work of a kitchen garden; a clerk is seated at a table bearing a money-bag and is entering accounts on a sheet. A gardener stands leaning on a spade, holding his wages. Latin translation is 'As riches grow, care follows' - Horace.
