Widcombe Manor House, Bath c.1740-1770

This is a most intriguing view as it shows Widcombe Manor before it was rebuilt by Phillip Bennet c.1727/1736 and therefore too early for Robins to have sketched from life. Robins must have copied an earlier view of the house. The original Manor house was erected in 1656, possibly to a design by Inigo Jones. Bennet married twice, both women dying young, in commemoration he included the arms of his two wives on the facade of his new South front. Inscribed no.39. From a collection of 45 sketches of Bath by Thomas Robins the Elder (1716-1770). By kind permission of V&A Images.
