Metope, The Circus, Bath 83

Description

Above the doorways, a band of 525 mysterious motifs, known as metopes, encircle the Circus, each one engaging historians and theorists as to their meaning. Freemasonry and alchemy the most popular, simple copies from a contemporary pattern book the least romantic, these unique symbols combined with the visionary architecture of John Wood, makes the Circus one of the most important buildings of its time. Photographed by Rob Yeatman.
