This magnificent photograph shows a group of brave men who have climbed on top of the wood that has been swept downstream (possibly from Holmes timber merchants- see Image Ref. 53962) and is blocking the narrow arches of the bridge. In the far distance, a group of people looking down Southgate Street at the edge of the floodwater, which appears to have reached Lower Borough Walls. Photographed on 25th October 1882.
