Description

This plan is a reduced scale version of Thomas Thorpe's map 'An Actual Survey of the City of Bath, in the County of Somerset, and of Five Miles Round' of 1742. It was aimed at visitors to Bath who wished to escape into the surrounding countryside for walks or rides. It has concentric circles drawn at one mile intervals allowing the reader to work out their distance from the city at a glance. An earlier version of this map was used by William Smith, the 'Father of English Geology' as the base for his first geological map of the area around Bath and it clearly shows the route of the Somersetshire Coal Canal, surveyed by Smith.
