The Kennet and Avon Canal was finished about 1810 though work on them had started long before. The canal's visual contribution to the building of Bath is itself considerable and as it ran through Sydney Gardens it was made an embellishment and there the bridges are of real distinction. Otherwise we have the curious little gothic lock cottages and the ordinary foot or road bridges of a pleasing design in the local stone.
