Haile Selassie, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Elect of God, Emperor of Ethiopia, was exiled in Bath between 1936 and 1940 following occupation by the Italians, staying at Fairfield House, Newbridge. He returned in October 1954 for a three day State Visit and received the Freedom of the City of Bath.
